About Arctica
Arctica Capital is an early-stage venture fund, US-based and investing globally across the free world.
We are investors who have spent our careers as operators, company builders, and corporate executives on both sides of the innovation market, and we run the firm the way we underwrite: evidence first, risks named plainly, substance over volume.
Two questions
The first question defines resilience, and the second defines how we invest. Everything on this page follows from taking both seriously.
What must the nations of the free world be able to do, consistently and without interruption, for prosperity to compound?
01
Where does a single innovation strengthen several of those capacities at once?
02
Resilience is the capacity of the nations of the free world to consistently produce, power, move, connect, and defend in every environment, from permissive to contested. Prosperity is downstream of resilience. For a generation, the free world underinvested in that capacity, and the last several years exposed the erosion in public: supply chains failed under a pandemic, European energy failed when its supplier turned hostile, export controls revealed the free world’s
The resilience thesis
dependency on a single country for critical materials, and sustained intrusions showed how contested the connective layer already is. The rebuilding now underway is the largest reallocation of industrial and security capital in decades. That rebuilding is the market we invest in, and we invest in it with our risks named plainly, because honest underwriting is the rarest thing in this landscape.
Principles
EVIDENCE FIRST
Our conclusions follow the record: primary sources, named figures, and claims that survive checking. When the evidence argues against our own preferences, the evidence wins.
HONEST RISK
Every thesis we publish names what could go wrong. The resilience landscape is crowded with promotional certainty, and credibility belongs to the willingness to say the hard part plainly.
ONE SYSTEM
The five verticals we invest in behave as one interconnected system. We evaluate every company by what it strengthens across that system, and the strongest positions strengthen more than one thing at once.
GLOBAL BY DESIGN
Resilience is a coalition project. We are US-based, we invest across the free world, and we build with allied founders, partners, and capital.
COMPOUNDING IS THE TEST
Prosperity is downstream of resilience, and resilience compounds when its capacities run uninterrupted. We concentrate capital where an innovation keeps the compounding going.
The resilience system of the free world is larger than our focus. Food and water resources, resilient financial systems, and free and open commerce belong to it just as legitimately as our five verticals. We start with these five because innovations within them are unusually cross-applicable, and focused investment captures a compounding network effect. That cross-vertical compounding is both the reason these five were chosen and the core of how we underwrite.
Principles
-
Defense holds the free world’s capability edge, and its structural challenge is the gap between innovation and adoption: fielding and integrating new capability at the pace threats now move. Budgets are rising across the alliance, and value increasingly accrues to the companies that close that gap.
-
The free world is rebuilding its capacity to produce at scale after decades of offshoring and workforce atrophy. The measure that matters is the rate of production, because inventories deplete and production endures. We back the automation, qualification, and process capability that raises that rate.
-
Prosperity moves, and the networks that move it are under stress from chokepoints, gray-zone interference, and demand they were never designed for. We back the systems that keep goods, materiel, and resources moving through disrupted networks.
-
Demand is accelerating just as infrastructure ages and supply chains concentrate. Powering critical systems reliably, in every environment, is the precondition for everything else in the system. We back generation, storage, the grid, and the electrification supply chain that keeps power consistent.
-
The connective layer of the free world is under sustained attack, from compromised carriers to severed cables. We back the infrastructure and security that keep information moving, processed, and protected, because every other vertical now runs on this one.
How we see the market
Our market insight is deepened by Snowball Innovation Advisory, an embedded operating partner to the innovation investment teams of global corporations and government organizations, whose senior practitioners give us early visibility into how corporate demand for resilience technology actually forms. That proximity is how we underwrite adoption before we invest, and it is how we help portfolio companies win their first corporate customers after we do.
How we invest
We invest at the early stage, globally across the free world. We look for companies whose innovations strengthen more than one capacity of the resilience system at once, and we underwrite them evidence-first: primary sources, named risks, and adoption pathways we can verify through people who have run them. After we invest, we work alongside founders on the path into corporate and government customers, because in these markets the first anchor relationship decides the trajectory.
